On June 5-6, 2013, five OVC consultants will deliver workshops and plenary session at the 17th Annual Melanie Ilene Rieger Memorial Conference. The 1-hour plenary, "Dealing with Bullying and Cyber bullying" will focus on the effects of cyber bullying as told by the mother of a teen who committed suicide because she was bullied on the social networking site, MySpace. The 1-hour plenary "Opening Up About Child Sexual Abuse" will discuss the personal experience of a former NFL Linebacker as a survivor of child sexual abuse. The 1-hour plenary "Behind the Mask of a Child Rapist - Hope's Journey" will explore the issues of child molestation, and ways that service providers can better understand and support victims. The 2-hour workshop "Social Workers -Making a Case for Safety" (delivered twice) will address safety concerns for social workers and advocates, as well as information about safety planning if they have to conduct home visits or face potentially dangerous situations. The 2-hour workshop "Sounds of Healing" (delivered twice) focuses on healing and overcoming tragedy, abuse, and trauma after the loss of a loved one by violence. The 1-hour plenary "Speaking Out, Reaching Out: Paths to Survival" will close out the conference with humor and will focus on positive ideas for surviving tragedy and the obstacles that may be experienced in the wake of violent tragedy and loss. Approximately 600 participants are expected to attend the overall conference and plenary sessions and 100 participants are expected to attend each workshop, including victim advocates, educators, law enforcement personnel, medical and mental health service providers, faith-based service providers, emergency service providers, corrections, probation, and court personnel, prosecutors, administrators, volunteers, and judges.
