According to federal statistics, 18.7 million people were victimized by a violent or property crime in 2010. As a direct result of crimes committed against them, victims suffer untold losses from property theft and damage, medical expenses, and lost pay due to injuries or participation in the justice process.
Crime victims have a variety of needs, many of which evolve through the criminal justice process. When defendants or convicted offenders are placed under community supervision-including pretrial release, probation or parole-crime victims often have needs for information about their case, assistance and referrals to address personal safety concerns, and guidance on the community corrections process. Probation and parole professionals have important obligations to implement crime victims' rights and provide victim services.
This webinar will provide an overview of key crime victims' rights relevant to community supervision and community corrections' role for implementation and enforcement of these rights. This webinar is produced by the American Probation and Parole Association through support from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime.
Learning Objectives By the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to: -Discuss the impact of crime on victims. -List the most common rights of victims, as recognized by state and Federal legislation. -Identify community corrections' role in the implementation of victims and rights.
