Supporting Crime Victims With Disabilities Curriculum (English)

Crime victims with disabilities may face challenges other victims don't, such as the ability to access services or communicate with advocates. "Supporting Crime Victims With Disabilities" focuses on recognizing and addressing these challenges so that all victims with disabilities receive the necessary support and assistance. This 3-day training is designed for victim service providers, advocates for people with disabilities, self-advocates, and allied professionals. Using case studies and small group discussions, participants will examine the prevalence of crime against people with disabilities, perceptions of the criminal justice system, tenets of the disabilities movement, and the impact of disabilities on daily life. Through collaborative activities participants will identify ways the various agencies, organizations, and systems can work together to better serve crime victims with disabilities.

People with Dementia as Witnesses to Emotional Events

Elderly person with dementia are often the only witnesses to crimes against them, such as physical or financial elder abuse, yet they are disparaged and discounted as unreliable. Clinical experience with this population indicates that significant emotional experiences may be salient to people with dementia, and that certain behaviors and characteristics enhance their credibility as historians. This is the first systematic research to identify people with dementia with reliable emotional memory and their characteristics.

Effectiveness of Coordinated Outreach in Intimate Partner Violence Cases: A Randomized, Longitudinal Design

The current study tested the prediction that early coordinated victim outreach would improve criminal justice outcomes as well as increase victim safety and empowerment among victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). In Their Own Words: Domestic Abuse in Later Life

This two-DVD package and training guide (NCJ 227928) uses the voices of older victims to facilitate a dialog among a range of professionals about the dynamics of abuse, the barriers these victims have to overcome to live free from abuse, and interventions and potential collaborations that may be effective in such cases. In addition to individual segments with victims, family members, victim service providers, and allied professionals, the DVDs include several topical segments and a montage of victim and advocate voices designed for use by policymakers. It also includes an interactive role play between a parish nurse and an adult daughter caring for her father intended to help professionals recognize justifications for elder mistreatment. A trainer's guide, which accompanies these DVDs, provides background on the victims and discussion questions targeted at a variety of professional audiences.

Elder Abuse Emerges From the Shadows of Public Consciousness

Implementing SANE Programs in Rural Communities: The West Virginia Regional Mobile SANE Project

Although Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) programs have spread throughout the country, they remain scarce in rural communities. OVC’s replication guide highlights an OVC-funded demonstration project from the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services (FRIS), which sought to use on-call SANEs to serve hospitals throughout a four-county region in a rural area of West Virginia. The guide focuses on how the project was planned and implemented and the lessons learned by FRIS and other stakeholders. It also provides a checklist for other rural communities to use in replicating a similar project and access to materials developed during implementation.
